Erica and I love to go to Mama’s Fish House for special occasions like birthdays and anniversaries. Even for these special occasions, we still opt for lunch over dinner. Mama’s Fish House is ranked the second most popular restaurant in America by Open Table. I don’t blame you, you want to fully enjoy the atmosphere and experience while dining at this world-class, Hawaiian restaurant. The restaurant is located in a coconut grove surrounded by palm trees with a view of Mama’s Beach on Kuau Cove.

Maui Vacation News

Mama’s Fish House became a popular neighborhood restaurant, known for good fresh fish. Customers chose what fish they wanted and then chose any one of six ways to cook it. Their first stop was Rarotonga Island, 750 miles Southwest. The Cook Islands were then owned by New Zealand and the food there was a mix of British and Polynesian. Avarua, Rarotonga was a comfortably small island town and the harbor was good. Floyd & Doris made many friends and hoped to return to spend more time there.

How is Mama’s Fish House Rated?

He could rest motionless at depths of 30 feet, waiting for the right fish to come to him. Sometimes he was able to snatch sweet mantis shrimp from their holes in the lagoon floor. As evening approached young Marquesians performed traditional erotic dances to the music of guitars, ukuleles and multiple drummers. The rhythm of the drums and the fast Tahitian guitar strum was infectious. The Fete lasted late into the night, the coconut trees lit by flaming torches and the music and drumming echoing off the mountains.

The restaurant is tucked away in a quiet cove east of Paia, on Maui’s north shore. You’ll pass it if you embark on the Road to Hana, though a trip to the restaurant will be a separate outing. As I mentioned above, Mama’s Fish House sources its fish from local fishers, typically from nearby waters.

Once there, they explained their religion and what they believed. As Marinero approached the equator and the windless doldrums, it became unbearably hot and steamy. At night the entire boat would be lit by explosions of phosphorescent light from deep in the ocean.

When I lived on Maui, I went to Mama’s Fish House a handful of times. I’ll share a little about my food today, but you can find reviews for the restaurant far and wide. I mostly wanted to talk about what to expect when you dine here. All are exceptional—and, at about $65 an entree, exceptionally expensive. Stroll the white-sand beach or relax under the shade of the coconut trees, all while taking pictures to capture the memory forever. Also, with the beach views from your table, the pictures from inside the restaurant will be all the better.

If you hate feeling rushed at restaurants, you’ll love your time at Mama’s Fish House. They offer a relaxed, full experience but move quickly enough that you don’t get tired of sitting there. I’ve been with a toddler, so achieving this balance is a big accomplishment. Even if you’re early, you’ll want to go straight to check in and let them know you’re there. From there, you’ll be free to wander around the lawn and beach. There are beautiful swaying palm trees, tide pools, a traditional Hawaiian canoe, a few benches, and beautiful landscaping.

First and foremost I would like to mention that the staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome for our anniversary dinner. We were so glad to have celebrated at Mama's Fish House. The Mama's experience wouldn't be possible without our local farmers. Produce delivered daily keeps our menu fresh and connected to the land. They were determined to showcase the fish and the foods of Polynesia to their customers.

No electronic navigation aids existed then and Floyd navigated by sun sights taken with a sextant, just as sea captains had done for hundreds of years. Using a marine clock that was calibrated with time signals broadcast by shortwave radio, Doris called out the exact second that was noon. Floyd measured the angle of the sun from the horizon with his sextant. Using formulas from a book, Marinero’s position could be determined to within two miles. Our Reservationist can book both Lunch & Dinner up to 18 months in advance. All requests will have to be made through our website or over the phone.

Editing our videos, teaching the kids how to snorkel, and learning about the 'aina (land) and Hawaii culture are my favorite things to do. Lunchtime is the best time to go to Mama’s Fish House for Erica and me. We also like taking our son Henry there for lunch as proper dinner dining is past his bedtime. We can all enjoy the beach cove and Maui’s North Shore for the day.

Steps away from our restaurant and the beach, the Inn at Mama's is where coziness and elegance meet. ‘Ulu, mango, liliko‘i, Ahi, Onaga, avocado, seasons change and so does our menu. Depending what ingredients the ‘āina provides us, our chefs will create flavors inspired by the seasons and the taste of Polynesia.

Starting with a nightly torch lighting ceremony, outdoor lights illuminate overhead, and the Fairmont’s elegant pool becomes a stunning focal point. New hotels were opening and young people were moving to Maui to work in them. Many became loyal Mama’s customers once they learned how good fresh fish can be when properly prepared.

The drive after lunch, with the views, is a much more enjoyable experience. While the lunch menus aren’t the same as dinner menus, it is hard to tell them apart. The most expensive dinner entrees are removed and replaced with sandwiches. Mama’s Fish House does have one beef option for meat-eaters who aren’t into seafood. They also can easily alter certain menu items for vegetarian or vegan diets.

Lunch might be a salad of fish marinated in coconut milk and lime juice and served in a coconut. (Tahitian fish salad and Hinano beer are served at Mama’s Fish House). Floyd and Doris dreamed of someday opening their own Vaima. On a glorious morning, 36 days out of San Diego, Marinero sailed into the deep harbor of Tai O’Hai bay.

This is a great chance to don any special resort wear you brought along on your vacation. Men often wear aloha shirts with slacks, while ladies wear light floral dresses or jumpsuits. Don’t fret if you get to Maui and realize you didn’t pack a designer cocktail dress. While the restaurant is considered an upscale spot, the attire at Mama’s is what I’d call island casual.
